Floral scent and pollinator visitation in relation to floral colour morph in the mixed‐mating annual herb <i>Collinsia heterophylla</i>

چکیده

Even though floral scent is of major importance for pollinator attraction, it less investigated than other traits. Previous studies suggest the joint exploration olfactory and visual cues to understand plant–pollinator interactions. We flower scents in Collinsia heterophylla, a bee-pollinated, annual herb with mixed-mating system combining self- outcross-pollination. In Collinsia, size development variation related mating system, ranging from large-flowered species small-flowered self-pollinated species. However, our knowledge, has not been described any genus. also studied whether flower-emitted volatiles were coupled presence versus absence coloured band on upper lip within population C. if these colour morphs affected visitation. performed headspace collections greenhouse potted flowering plants, compared controls bud stage. Flower-specific highly dominated by terpenoid compounds typical bee-pollinated such as β-myrcene, (Z)- (E)-ocimene sesquiterpenes (E)-α-bergamotene β-sesquiphellandrene. The aliphatic ester methyl hexanoate was prominent, together additional esters, whereas cinnamate constituted only aromatic compound. Floral showed no qualitative difference volatiles, but morph produced significantly higher quantities seven 26 individual compounds. A field experiment natural population, using behavioural observations florescent dyes dusted flowers, could detect differences visitation between morphs. conclude that heterophylla flowers emit volatile commonly associated attraction their most important pollinators. It would be interesting explore function relate across better understanding influence evolution.

Pollinator responses to floral colour change, nectar, and scent promote reproductive fitness in Quisqualis indica (Combretaceae).

Floral colour change is visual signals for pollinators to avoid old flowers and increase pollination efficiency. Quisqualis indica flowers change colour from white to pink to red may be associated with a shift from moth to butterfly pollination. To test this hypothesis, we investigated Q. indica populations in Southwest China. Flowers secreted nectar continuously from the evening of anthesis un...

The smell of environmental change: Using floral scent to explain shifts in pollinator attraction.

As diverse environmental changes continue to influence the structure and function of plant-pollinator interactions across spatial and temporal scales, we will need to enlist numerous approaches to understand these changes. Quantitative examination of floral volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is one approach that is gaining popularity, and recent work suggests that floral VOCs hold substantial pr...

Gain and Loss of Floral Scent Production through Changes in Structural Genes during Pollinator-Mediated Speciation

The interactions of plants with their pollinators are thought to be a driving force in the evolution of angiosperms. Adaptation to a new pollinator involves coordinated changes in multiple floral traits controlled by multiple genes. Surprisingly, such complex genetic shifts have happened numerous times during evolution. Here we report on the genetic basis of the changes in one such trait, flora...
